General Introduction

Affiliated with Beijing Normal University and located in the Zhuhai Educational Park, the International School of Communication Design, Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai is a professional college specialized in communication designs. It modelled after the advanced teaching curriculum widely used in Europe and other international teaching institutions. 

Our objective is to develop communication design professionals who have a multi-cultural background and are artistically creative and market focused. Understanding the uniqueness of today’s communication design needs, our curricula adopt the century old rich tradition of Beijing Normal University along with the choicest from the world-renowned German vocational institution and the classic British collegiate. 

School curricula were developed through referencing and adopting the courses established at Hamburg Design Factory International of Germany and Colleges of Arts and Media Design of Portsmouth University, United Kingdom. Instructors with overseas experience are given direct teaching responsibilities for many of the specialty courses. They are also responsible for managing and providing quality assurance for these classes. 

The School plans to recruit and enrol 800 hundred students from all over China including Hong Kong and Macao in the next four years. We will boost the quality of our products by keep the School “small and specialized”. The goal is to make our School the cradle of development for top and creative professionals specialized in media and communication design. 

Located in the city proper of Zhuhai, a special economic and educational zone, our campus is one-hour ferry-ride away from Hong Kong and 20 minutes car-ride away from Macau. With the Phoenix Maintain in the backdrop, the School provides a scenic and tranquil living and learning environment for all. 

The Design Factory International, Hamburg is a German institution (Berufsfachschule) of higher professional design education founded in 1990. It commits itself to the nurture of professional designers of new media who can adapt the rapid development of the culture and communication industry. Since the time of its foundation, the college has never ceased to adjust its curricula so as to keep its leading position in the field of modern design and new media among the globalized economy. In the past 10 years, Hamburg has developed into a media center of Germany even of the whole North Europe. All kinds of enterprises connecting with media, design and information industries are developing rapidly. Our college always keeps a close connection with the industry of communication and culture. Our team of teachers is made of the successful persons from this industry. Because of the high quality of our teaching and the simultaneous pace with the market, there are more and more students apply for admissions into our college though the places we could offer at present are so limited. Most of our students won various interesting and challenging positions in many different companies of design and media after graduation, which includes arts directors and creativity supervisors, multimedia designers, packaging and product designers, web page designers, movie and video experts, visual communication designers, etc.

We take high reputations on the development of relevant subjects with updated technology and on the providing of talents needed by this industry. We aim at improving your creative knowledge and skills, so your study and research can be carried out with the strong supports from us. We will also bring out various courses, lectures, conferences, individual tutoring and practical subjects in our modern workrooms and with the help of our professional equipments. The courses can be taught either in groups with various numbers of people or one-to-one (one tutor to one student).

Portsmouth sits at the southern coast of the United Kingdom, it takes only one hour and twenty minutes to get to London by train.


Study Programs

1. “3+2” and “3+0.5” (Berufsfachschule)
After the students have studied for three years at Zhuhai Campus of Beijing Normal University, they can choose to sit an examination for overseas study. If the result and their English level meet the requirements, and if their financial support is also available, the students can apply for another two-year’s further study at the College of Art, Design and Media in the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. After graduation, these students can obtain diplomas of higher professional education which are recognized by German government and bachelor degrees of the UK. They can also choose to continue their study for higher diplomas in the UK.

2. “4” and “4+1.3”
Four-year’s system for a bachelor’s degree in Beijing Normal University and “4+1.3” system for a master’s degree of in the UK.

After the students complete four-year’s study at our college in Zhuhai Campus of Beijing Normal University, they can choose to sit an examination for overseas study. If the results and their English level meet the requirements, and if their financial support is also available, the students can apply for another fifteen-month’s further study at the College of Art, Design and Media in the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. After graduation, these students can obtain bachelor’s degrees of Beijing Normal University, British master’s degrees and graduation diplomas of higher professional education recognized by German government.

If the results of their examinations for overseas study are unsatisfied, or their financial conditions are unavailable, but they have passed graduation examinations of our college, the students can obtain bachelor’s degrees of Beijing Normal University and graduation diplomas of higher professional education recognized by German government.

Notes: Requirements of English Levels:

The students, who want to study abroad, will need higher levels of English. The details are as below:

English level for enrollment examination: fundamental
English level upon graduation for students of professional education: IELTS 5.5
English level for bachelor graduates: IELTS 5.5
English level for study in the UK for a bachelor’s degree: IELTS 6.0
English level for study in the UK for a master’s degree: IELTS 6.5


Special Fields

1. Dynamic Imaging—the Rein of Sound, Light, Color and Film
Movies, short TV segments, MTV, three-dimensional cartoons, beginning segments with special effects, dynamic imaging designers are all challenging professions. After learning, you will know how to control cartoons and sound and how to make them into dazzling pictures. The course of stage director and storyboard etc will also help you deduce the stories written by you own.

2. Multimedia and Web Pages—the Creation of Virtual World
Internet has been an indispensable part of our life, and your design will make those web pages more brilliant. Flash, Shockwave and many other interactive technologies will let the audience feel all the possibilities brought by the networks. You will also learn how to design and create interactive DVD and CD, then you will appreciate the charm of digital media.

3. Desktop Printing and Publications—Life Taste and Popularity
The click of computer mouse cannot take place the enjoyment of thumb reading. The medium of paper is still a window for people to know the world and feel the popularity. After the learning and then the grasp of all kinds of pre-printing technology and layout edition, you will be competent for the design of newspapers, magazines, stylebooks, posters and product packaging. Your works will be printed thousands upon thousands and they will enrich and decorate the people’s life. 

4. Advertising Creativity and Communication—Combination of Inspiration and Selling Points
You will be the core of whole designing team and the source of inspiration. After learning the flow of creativity, skills of text writing and analysis of the market, you will be competent for creativity or fine arts director to lead your team, to find a balance in the competitive market for your innovative ideas, to let your designer and your customer understand each other so as to create more effective design.


Career Opportunities
Qualified graduates, with their multicultural study experience, unique ways of thinking and profound understanding to the fashions and media, will easily find their positions in the industry of media and advertising all over the world, such as creative and art directors, three-dimensional cartoon designers, multi-media and web designers, presswork and packaging designers, visual communication and enterprise image designers etc. In addition, the students can also choose to continue their study abroad or accept the practice projects offered by the college.


Curriculum

 Notes: 
a) From the 2nd semester of Year 2 to the 2nd semester of Year 3, the students will be grouped into 4 different specialty directions with a size of 40 students for each class.
b) During this period (2nd Semester of Year 2--2nd Semester of Year 3), the students can choose courses freely, but they should complete 4 professional courses out of the above 16 each semester, and 3 semesters later, they should complete a total of 12 out of the above 16 professional courses and 3 electives before they could apply for a degree.
c) The students should obtain all the credits of the required courses for the specialty direction they chose.
