School of Communication

The entry to the WTO and winning the 2008 Olympic games reflect the urgent need of an international standard of professionalism in the field of media communications. 

By employing the international cooperation model, the School of Communication (SOC) will concentrate on improving students’ foreign language proficiencies and their practical application. 

The School of Communication Beijing Normal University - Zhuhai Campus (BNU SOC) aims to satisfy the huge demand for international standard media professionals for future market needs. 

1. Mission of the School – Training and providing professionals of international standards for the Communication and Media industry.

The SOC emphasizes not only on maintaining the traditional theory studies and moral excellence, but also on diversifying the students’ knowledge into the international arena. The academic unit of the school offers a range of programs in three major options: “TV & Radio

Program Producing & Editing ”, “Advertising Management” and “News & Mass Media Studies”. The SOC focuses on providing learning materials and courses of international standard, so as to cultivate and develop students’ creativity, proficient foreign language capabilities, quality operational skills and excellent professionals for the communication and media industry. 



2. International Cooperation Model

The learning model focuses on introducing and providing international learning materials, recruiting foreign lecturers & tutors and offering bilingual courses. Students with satisfactory results after 4 years’ study in the SOC are eligible to apply for graduation and a BNU bachelor’s degree. 

Another study model, “2+2+1”, provides students with opportunities to study abroad. After completing their first 2-yeas’ of study, the SOC would recommend qualified students to overseas universities and institutions to continue their required academic studies.In addition, 

the SOC would assist students in applying for the non-immigrant Student’s Visas of Foreign Countries such as the USA, Great Britain, and Australia. Qualified graduates will be awarded a bachelor’s degree by overseas universities. After that, students may apply for the one-year practical training program that allows them to legally work for overseas media companies for a period of one year.


3. 2003 Student Enrollment & Course Features

Beijing Normal University – Zhuhai Campus plans to enroll 260 students for the School of Communication over three major study options (“TV & Radio Program Producing & Editing ”, “Advertising Management” and “News & Mass Media Studies”).

In Guangdong Province: “TV & Radio Program Producing & Editing ” – 30 students
“Advertising Management” – 50 students
“News & Mass Media Studies” – 50 students

In Jilin Province: “Advertising Management” – 15 students
“News & Mass Media Studies” – 15 students
In Liaoning Province: “TV & Radio Program Producing & Editing ” – 10 students

In Shandong Province: “TV & Radio Program Producing & Editing” – 10 students
“News & Mass Media Studies” – 20 students

In Fujian Province: “News & Mass Media Studies” – 15 students
In Hunan Province: “Advertising Management” – 20 students

In Hubei Province: “TV & Radio Program Producing & Editing ” – 10 students

In Sichuen Province: “Advertising Management” – 15 students

The School of Communication will diversify students’ knowledge into the international arena. The academic unit of the school offers a range of programs in three major options:

 “TV & Radio Program Producing & Editing ”, “Advertising Management” and “News & Mass Media Studies”. The School will make efforts to pursue its goal, turning the SOC into an important educational and research base for multi-disciplines and advanced scientific studies.


1). TV & Radio Program Producing & Editing 

This course will focus on the practical experience of editing and producing TV and Radio programs, and especially on the innovative and digital technical knowledge required meeting the huge market demands. 

One of the strengths of the course structure is to guide students to develop creativity and TV & Radio Program editing & production abilities. The SOC has various study facilities ranging from libraries, studio rooms, editing labs to a sound effect lab, all located in the main building. With the support of tutors, students can practice what they have learned in the class.

Curriculum:

TV Art Concepts, Video & Visuals, TV Editing, Programming Management and Editing, Documentation Production, Digital Video Production, TV Reporting & Interviewing, Filming & Photographic Techniques.

2). Advertising Management

China’s entry to the WTO has encouraged more and more foreign companies & investors to enter the Chinese market and hence create a huge demand for advertising & public relations professionals.

The SOC is committed to preparing its students to be top-notch professionals in the media communication industry. In implementing, the SOC will require its students to develop creativity, a strong sense of advertising campaigns, and skills for proposal preparation and market research. 

Cases studies from both domestic & foreign countries will be introduced in students’ learning materials. Students will gain insights into different combinations of media procurement and successful promotional campaign planning. Courses include production and implementation of advertising campaigns, successful advertising case analysis, advertising psychology, the relationship between target audiences & the medium. Students will be able to acquire the latest advertising & media management knowledge from international business markets.

Curriculum: 

Advertising and Media Operations, Marketing Sales Strategy, Advertising Plans, Media Analysis, Digital Advertising Production, Special Computer Effects, Public Communication Skills, Psychology.

Domestic and Foreign TV Broadcasting Companies, International Advertising Agencies, Media Design Firms, Program Production Companies, Public Relations Companies, Market Research Companies.

3). News & Mass Media Studies

This is a new program designed to stress the characteristics & application of different media, and study the effects and relationships between various mass media vehicles. 

The SOC will cooperate with overseas universities & media companies in providing students with a quality study atmosphere. Graduates will have opportunities to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned to the real business market.

Curriculum:

Theory of Communication, New Media Studies, Economy of Communication, TV & Movie Reviews, Advertising & Media Operation, International News and Communications, Modern Interviewing, Program Management.

Career Opportunities:
Publishers, TV & Radio, Network Communication, International Advertising Agencies, Media Design Firms, TV Program Production Houses, Market Research Companies.
